It was by chance that I traveled to Nicaragua in August 2006. My primary purpose at the time was to meet a Cuban friend of mine, José Bienvenido Martinez, who was supposed to visit Managua on business and whom I had not seen in six years due to the severely tightened travel restrictions put in place by the Bush administration. I decided to go to Nicaragua a week or so before Bienvenido to explore and photograph. Although his trip was canceled at the last minute, it was my good fortune that he introduced me to a friend of his, Guillermo Cortes, the editor of Medios y Mensajes. Guillermo allowed me to accompany him while he conducted research in several remote areas of Nicaragua for a novel he was working on.
